So, here’s the thing…

I recently went to visit my aunt. She lives near Philadelphia in a very rural area. She’s a sports medicin vet, meaning she works primarily on horses. I had a great time when staying with her. My primary objective when visiting was to help her with various odd jobs around her house. I went to her house on a sunday and left on a thursday. During the week she was on call, which meant we had to go to calls/ check ups/ general vet business. As I previously stated I really enjoyed staying with her, the main reason was getting to go to all the different farms and meet all sorts of people. There is a very small community of farmers/farm owners where she lives, so almost all of the farmers/farm owners have , at least, heard of all the others. Every day that we went on call we, coincidentally, ended up having to visit my aunt’s friend’s Barn. Her friend’s name was Kate, a lovely woman, really. Anyway, as my aunt would be occupied looking at a few different horse which took a rather long time; I would help with whatever was going on in the Barn ( moving a large fan to keep the barn cool, pushing a wheel barrow, moving horses around, ect.). Semi-Jokingly around the last day I was there Kate asked if I wanted to work at the barn. I laughed and went on with what I was doing, but now being home I realize that’s very much what I want; a job there at that exact barn. The atmosphere of living there is very similar to the one in the book “All Creatures Great and Small” by James Herriot. It’s an atmosphere I really enjoy, and would love to spend more time in.

Now, to change the subject just a bit, a few weeks ago I somehow found myself wanting to get pigs. We certainly have enough room for them, and I am very capable of taking care of them. An added bonus to the pig venture was that apparently you can sell the for about $500 a piece in New York to chefs. A sow has ~ 8 pigs to a littler, now that’s $4,000 dollars a littler! I was planning on getting 2 sows, which can be bought for ~ $200. Also, a sow can have more than one litter a year, the kind of pigs I was thinking of getting are apparently very good at doing that. So, taking out expenses and mishaps, I would, optimistically make about $5,000 per litter, perhaps twice a year.

Now, to change the subject a bit more, but don’t worry, I’ll tie it all together in the end. For a long time I’ve argued with myself about what to do when I get older. Part of me wants to be a veterinarian, similar to my aunt. The other part wants to be a Mechanical Engineer. The way I see it choosing between these two jobs (hog farmer/stable hand) is more or less choosing between vet and engineer. If I were to work at Kate’s it would definitely prepare me for being a vet. If I were to get the pigs it would prepare me for being an engineer. At Kate’s I would be getting experience working with horses, not to mention going and working directly with my aunt. I would also have the ability to make friends in the veterinary field, which could prove useful later on. With the pigs I would be able to stay at home and I would be making much more money with pigs than working at Kate’s. Also, at home I could work on taking classes to prepare me for being an engineer, and build pieces of junk in the garage that move and stuff. If I were to become a vet I would make plenty of money, not nearly as much as a doctor, though. One of the things that my aunt complains about is that she spent just as much money on vet school as it cost to go to medical school, and learned almost the same things, yet she doesn’t make nearly as much money. I also love to travel, and my aunt gets lots of time to travel and do cool things. Obviously, I like working with animals and on farms, which is why I would like to be a vet. Yet at the same time, I want to be an engineer. Engineers make a lot of money, and people are pretty impressed with the fact that you’re an engineer, or even that you want to be one. One of the main reasons I want to be an engineer is that I have hundreds of ideas floating around in my head. All of the ideas require an advanced knowledge of engineering. A few examples – an airpowered car, a highly efficient wind turbine, and for a few weeks now I’ve desperately wanted to build a replica wright brothers airplane (with modern materials) and learn to pilot it.

I went to a Fleet Foxes concert tonight. A lot of fun. I went with Ben, Leah, and Leah’s friend Bridget (I’m not sure if she has a blog I can link to). It was in Philadelphia, the drive wasn’t so bad, Ben fell asleep. We got to the city, parked, and ate some pizza at rather dirty looking establishment. The Pizza was good though. Ben got a Gyro. We got into the place and pushed our way through the crowd. Espers opened, they were pretty okay. Bridget almost passed out (it was quite hot in there). Then the Fleet Foxes. It was a very neat experience to get to see them in person like that. You could feel the singing in your legs and feat, and feel the drum all the way to your chest. They finished up and Leah tried to be a groupie. Then we drove home, I wish I could have gotten to talk to Leah and Bridget more. Then my mom picked me up and I came home and ate a piece of cold english muffin pizza and wrote this. Thanks Leah, Ben.
